Wikipedia on lives and letters – contribute!

An enthusiastic user of Wikipedia as a way of finding out about people and ideas? Have concerns about the way its entries deal with the lives and works of people your research is concerned with? Grind your teeth about particular entries but don’t know how to correct them?

These different positions were expressed around the Wikipedia entry for Olive Schreiner during a University of Edinburgh-based short course on editing wiki entries. As a result, a detailed list of problems with the Schreiner entry has been compiled by Liz Stanley, long-term researcher on the Schreiner corpus. This can be accessed in a WWW blog, at https://www.whiteswritingwhiteness.ed.ac.uk/blog/wikipedia-on-olive-schreiner/

But don’t just grind your teeth or tut-tut, Email WWW about your thinking on the issues and examples of entries you think really good or not so. Also think about helping to make problematic entries better. In this connection, an Edinburgh webinar will soon be available for people who have knowledge about a topic but don’t yet know how to edit wiki entries. This will be publicised in a Lives & Letters mailing and also in a WWW weekly blog.
