The Great Cory Library Fieldtrip! Blog 20, Should we like them?

Monday 4 Aug: Do you have to approve of people you do research ‘on’, approve of them, admire them? Some researchers seem to feel this quite strongly and are quite shocked at someone saying the converse to them, that respect is a greater priority, while interest is a far greater priority still. I’ve been in email correspondence with someone about this and feel like a curmudgeonly character from Dickens or similar, but can’t help thinking, what a weird idea that liking or admiration might come into it. If that was a requirement, then precisely none of the research I’ve done over the years would ever have been done. And on this research trip, no Mary Moffat, no Robert Moffat, no Mary Livingstone, no Bessie Price et al, and certainly no %#%{!! David Livingstone. But how extraordinarily interesting it all is.
