Not quite….

Not quite….

I’ve just arrived in Durham for the second meeting of the New Modernist Editing Network, having missed its first when I was in South Africa. On receiving the papers, I was deep in the dusty brown envelopes of the Voss Collection, followed by the bad letter copies, receipts and old maps in the miscellaneous bit of Forbes Papers, followed by among other things the hundreds of cattle passes issued by a Parkinson progeny. Editing and modernism were not at the tip of my tongue, nor was what I was dealing with ‘texts’ in a finished writing for a literary purpose sense. But of course, having worked on the Olive Schreiner letters and also her literary manuscripts, at times I have also swum in the waters of new modernist texts. My over-riding feeling, however, across my various South African ventures is ‘not quite’. In a 10 minute introduction later tomorrow morning, I’m scheduled to talk about my sense of doing the ‘not quite’. It’s also the subject of a short new podcast coming shortly
